You can have the best TV and sound in the world, but if the couch is stiff, shallow or too small for everyone, movie night ends early. A good TV couch lets you sit back or lie down, fits the whole family facing the screen, and survives popcorn, pets and years of use.

Our verdict

Quick picks: the Albany Park Kova is the best couch for movie nights for most homes: deep, forgiving and modular. To lie flat, the Castlery Dawson. For a couch that rearranges and can hide surround speakers, the Lovesac Sactional. Renters should look at the box-shipped Cozey Ciello, and on a budget, the AllModern Miller chaise sectional.

What the reviews don’t tell you

Sofa reviews call seats “deep” or “cloud-like.” We put the measured seat depths reviewers report next to a sizing guide for different heights, and the result explains a lot of buyer regret.

Deep lounge seats are deeper than anyone sits upright

Your heightComfortable upright seat depth (Povison)
Under 5′4″19 to 22 in
5′4″ to 5′9″20 to 24 in
Over 5′9″21 to 25 in

Apartment Therapy measured the Kova’s seats at 30 inches deep, and Modern Castle lists the Sactional’s standard seat at 29 inches. Both are deeper than the upright range for any height. That’s what makes them great for lounging and tucking your legs up, and why shorter people end up slouching or piling pillows behind them. In a mixed-height household, buy deep and keep two firm back pillows handy.

Seat width decides how many people really fit

Plan about 23 to 24 inches of cushion per person. The Kova’s seats are 42 inches wide, which is under two people per seat, so a three-seat Kova comfortably fits five, not six. Count cushion width, not seats, when the whole family watches together.

Returns can cost a fifth of the price

Living Cozy lists a 20% return fee on the Kova and a 20% restocking fee plus original packaging on the Dawson, with return shipping deducted on the Miller. Cozey lists a 30-day trial on the Ciello. Keep every box until you’re sure.

The picks

1. Albany Park Kova: best overall

Best for Family movie nights on a mid-range budget

  • Deep, forgiving cushions
  • Modular pieces, several layouts

The couch reviewers keep coming back to for lounging. Living Cozy found its feather-wrapped foam cushions stayed comfortable through three movies in a row, and it ships in boxes, which helps with narrow stairs. Living Cozy lists a lifetime warranty.

The catch: Apartment Therapy’s reviewer fluffs every cushion at least once a week, Living Cozy needed over an hour to assemble it rather than the quoted 15 minutes, and returns cost 20%.

2. Castlery Dawson: best for sprawling out

Best for sprawling Mid-range

Castlery Dawson Sofa

Best for Tall people and nappers

  • Extra-deep, cloud-like seat (about 45 in deep overall)
  • Optional matching ottoman
  • Chaise versions available
  • 10-year warranty

Built for lying down. Living Cozy lists about 45 inches of overall depth and a 10-year frame warranty, and the ottoman turns it into a lounging platform for one or two tall people.

The catch: it eats floor space, it’s too deep for upright sitting for many people, and returns carry a 20% restocking fee.

3. Lovesac Sactional: best modular, with built-in sound

Best modular Premium

Lovesac Sactional

Best for Home theater fans who want flexibility

  • Fully modular: rearrange or add seats anytime
  • Machine-washable covers
  • Optional StealthTech sound system hidden in the sofa
  • Wireless charging option

Seats and sides you can reconfigure forever, with covers that come off to wash. Modern Castle lists an 18-inch seat height and lifetime coverage on the seats, sides and hardware, with 3 or 5 years on covers depending on fabric. A five-year owner found the foam kept its shape, and PureWow’s reviewer still liked the optional StealthTech speakers built into the sofa after eight months.

The catch: expensive, especially with StealthTech; both long-term owners wished they’d ordered deep sides; and the five-year owner needed four people and a couple of hours to set it up.

4. Cozey Ciello: best for apartments and renters

Best for apartments Mid-range

Cozey Ciello Sofa

Best for Renters and anyone who moves often

  • Tool-free assembly
  • Washable covers
  • Ships in boxes
  • Soft yet supportive seat

Living Cozy assembled it without tools in under an hour from seven numbered boxes. Cozey lists removable washable covers, a 5-year warranty and a 30-day trial, which makes it one of the lowest-risk sofa purchases.

The catch: a softer build, and the back cushions slide and need fluffing.

5. AllModern Miller Chaise Sectional: best budget

Best budget Budget

AllModern Miller Chaise Sectional

Best for First apartments and tight budgets

  • One of the cheapest good sectionals
  • Chaise for putting your feet up
  • Clean, simple design
  • Well over 1,000 owner reviews, highly rated

A chaise sectional without designer pricing, with a strong owner rating. The catch: some long-term owners say the cushions soften with heavy use, and it’s not as deep as the premium picks. Best for a second TV room or lighter use.

Measure seat depth the way Povison suggests: push the back cushion into its normal position, start the tape where your lower back would touch and measure straight to the front edge. Brands measure differently, so compare that number.

What makes one last

Consumer Reports calls a kiln-dried hardwood frame with eight-way hand-tied springs the top of the range, and notes webbing stretches and plywood platforms are the least comfortable. Houzz suggests sinuous springs of at least 8-gauge wire and seat foam at least 4 inches thick at mid-range prices. Foam cores wrapped in down or synthetic down hold up better than loose fill.

Consumer Reports recommends fabrics labeled performance, commercial grade or indoor/outdoor, and notes polyester blends clean more easily than all-cotton or linen. It warns top-grain leather can stain easily with young kids.

Test it like a movie, not a showroom

  • Sit all the way back for at least 10 minutes with your feet flat.
  • Lie down along it with your head on the arm.
  • Lift the seat cushion and press the deck.
  • Unzip a back cushion and look for stitched channels.
  • Sit at one end while someone sits in the middle. Soft cushions that tip you together get old fast.

Fitting it to the TV

Top-down living room plan with a sectional centered on the TV, cushion space per person and room for rear speakers
Get the distance from a size calculator for your screen.

Decide where the couch goes from your screen size first; our couch distance guide and TV size calculator give the number. Center the main seat on the screen, keep coffee tables below the bottom of the picture, and leave room beside or behind for rear speakers (see the speaker placement calculator). Measure doors, hallways and stair turns too: they stop more sofas than room size does.

How we picked

We gathered the measurements and expert reviews for every pick, put them side by side, and worked out the comfort numbers the individual reviews leave out. Seat depths come from Apartment Therapy and Modern Castle, warranties and return terms from Living Cozy and the makers’ pages, and the sizing guidance from Povison, Consumer Reports and Houzz. Every source is listed at the end.
