Short version of this Bose Smart Soundbar review: it’s one of the easiest soundbars to recommend for bedrooms, apartments and anyone who mostly watches TV rather than blockbusters. Voices come through clearly, AI Dialogue Mode is aimed at people who keep reaching for subtitles, and unlike most compact bars it has real up-firing drivers for Dolby Atmos. It also plays music almost any way you like: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify Connect. The catch is bass. On its own it sounds light, and the add-ons that fix that cost a lot.

Our verdict

Score: 8.2/10. A slim, well-featured bar that makes TV dialogue easy to follow and plays music from any source. Buy it for a bedroom or apartment; skip it if you want cinema-style bass without paying for a bass module.

What the reviews don’t tell you

Your ceiling decides the Atmos

Up-firing drivers bounce sound off the ceiling, and Dolby’s installation guidelines say that works best on a flat, reflective ceiling around 7.5 to 12 feet high. Most US bedrooms and apartments with flat 8 or 9-foot drywall ceilings fit. Vaulted ceilings, very high ceilings and acoustic drop tiles are where the height effect fades, which likely explains why some reviewers found the Atmos impressive and others called it inconsistent.

Bass costs about as much as the bar

Bose’s own bundles show the price of fixing the bass: the soundbar with the Bass Module 500 lists at about double the price of the bar alone, and the soundbar with surround speakers at roughly 1.7 times. Once you add a bass module, you’re in the same price range as bigger soundbars with a sub in the box. If bass matters, compare full-system prices before you buy.

How it fits under your TV

TVScreen widthBar widthSpace each side
43-inchabout 37.5 in27.3 inabout 5 in
55-inchabout 48 in27.3 inabout 10 in
65-inchabout 57 in27.3 inabout 15 in
Our sums from Bose’s 27.34-inch width and standard 16:9 screen widths.

At 2.21 inches tall it’s half an inch lower than the Sonos Beam, so it fits under TVs with short feet. Keep the top clear: a TV or shelf hanging over the bar blocks the up-firing drivers.

Dialogue and AI Dialogue Mode

Clear speech is the Bose’s strongest point. The center tweeter keeps voices locked to the screen, and AI Dialogue Mode lifts voices above music and effects automatically. TechRadar found speech consistently easy to follow, while Tom’s Guide still heard muffled lines with the bass turned up, and SoundGuys suggests switching it off for music. Try it on; if voices sound thin, turn it off and raise the center channel in the app. More tips in our dialogue fixes.

Movies, music and smart features

TechRadar found the real height channels a noticeable step up from virtual-only bars. The limits reviewers agree on: a fairly narrow soundstage and light bass, so explosions and action scores lack weight. SoundGuys also notes the TrueSpace upmixing can’t be switched off completely and there’s no room calibration, so placement and manual EQ matter more.

Music is where it shines for a bedroom: stream over Wi-Fi from the Bose app, cast with Chromecast, use AirPlay 2 from an iPhone, play from Spotify Connect or pair any phone over Bluetooth. Alexa is built in. If you own Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, Personal Surround turns them into rear speakers for one listener, a clever extra but not a reason to buy the bar.

Setup and settings

  1. Plug the included HDMI cable into the TV’s ARC or eARC port. See HDMI ARC vs eARC.
  2. Turn on HDMI-CEC on the TV so its remote controls volume.
  3. Set the TV’s digital audio output to Auto or Passthrough for Atmos.
  4. Add the bar in the Bose app and connect it to Wi-Fi for AirPlay, Chromecast and updates.
  5. Bought it used? Factory reset it before setup, as Tom’s Guide notes.

What we liked

  • Clear, centered dialogue with a dedicated center tweeter
  • Real up-firing drivers for Atmos height
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify Connect
  • Slim, low design that fits under most TVs
  • Personal Surround with Ultra Open Earbuds

What we didn’t like

  • Light bass without a separate bass module
  • Add-on speakers are expensive
  • Narrow soundstage
  • No room calibration
  • Atmos depends heavily on your ceiling

Who should buy it

  • Buy it for a bedroom or apartment, mostly TV and news, trouble following dialogue, or if you want Bluetooth and Chromecast as well as Wi-Fi.
  • Skip it for room-filling bass, a vaulted ceiling, a room bigger than about 10 × 12 feet, or a budget surround system.
Wider, more musical alternative Mid-range

Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

Best for Living rooms and music lovers who may add a Sonos sub later

  • Wide, spacious sound for its size
  • Speech Enhancement and Night Sound
  • AirPlay 2 and Ethernet
  • Easy upgrade to Sonos sub and rears

Prices change often, so check today’s price on Amazon.

The Beam sounds wider and fuller but has no Bluetooth and only virtual Atmos. See our Sonos Beam review, Sonos Beam vs Bose and, if clearer dialogue is the only goal, best soundbars under $300.

How we picked

We gathered the measurements and expert reviews (TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, RTINGS and SoundGuys), put them side by side, and worked out what the individual reviews leave out, like how your ceiling changes the Atmos and what the bass add-ons really cost. Specs were checked on Bose’s product page. Every source is listed at the end.
